The Effects of health promotion program on prevention of new tobacco smokers in one higher education institute, Mae Hong Son province

Abstract

The situation of smoking behavior among global adolescent is increasing, and there is a risk of relying on Nicotine in cigarettes. Smoking is a health risk behavior that causes the disease. The objective to study the effect of health promotion programs on preventing new smokers in higher education institutions. This research is quasi-experimental one group the participants were 70 students. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed from June to December 2020. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, numbers, percentages, averages, standard deviations, and inferential statistics, viz., paired t-tests comparing the average scores between pre-test and post-test in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Results revealed that the average scores at post- test was greater than those at pre-test (P – Value < 0.05) and showed a higher level of satisfaction with the health promotion program. The recommendation for further study is the design of activities according to the adolescent, which results in participant satisfaction and affects smoking prevention behavior. It is on the basis of the self-efficacy perception of the adolescents, and there should be activities accord with the ethnic group diversity for the future. Which indicates that the program is valuable for developing health-promoting behaviors to prevent new smokers
