Effectiveness of Implementing a Happiness Program among Chronic Disease Patients with Depressive Disorder

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to study the effectiveness of implementing a happiness program among chronic disease patients with depressive disorder.


          Materials and method: This quasi-experimental research consisted of a two - group pretest-posttest design. The sample group comprised 60 chronic disease patients with depressive disorder who have lived in Wangthong District(30 patients in the experimental group) and Bang Rakum District(30 patients in the control group) in Phitsanulok Province.The instruments used in this study were the happiness program among chronic disease patients with depressive disorder, depression screening questionnaires consisting of nine questions and happiness screening questionnaires. The data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t- test and paired sample t-test.


          Results: After the intervention, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean score on happiness than before the intervention(P=.001). It also had a significantly higher mean score on happiness than the control group(P=.001). In addition, after intervention,the experimental group had a significantly lower mean score on depression than before the intervention (P=.001). Similarly, the experimental group had a significantly lower mean score on depression than the control group (P=.002).


          Conclusion: Happiness program among chronic disease patients with depressive disorder could be helpful in increasing happiness and reducing depression. Such program could be applied into activities for promoting happiness and preventing depression in patients at health centers and communities.
