Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of integrative group counseling based on Satir model on resilience among amphetamine-dependent women during rehabilitative phase as well as the process of resilience development after receiving integrative group counseling

Materials and methods This study is an embedded mixed method design which inserted the qualitative research into quantitative research. The quantitative research was a quasi-experimental design that use control groups and pretest. The samples consisted of 32 amphetamine-dependent women during rehabilitative phase, who were separated equally into experimental groups and control group. The experimental groups were intervened by group counseling for a total of 24 hours in conjunction with the usual rehabilitative program while the control group was intervened by only rehabilitative program with resilience sheet for self-directed learning. The qualitative case study research used in-depth interview to explore the process of resilience by 4 key informants in the experimental group. The tools in this study were resilience scale with highly reliability (Cronbach alph = 0.92), appropriate content and construct validity investigated by second-order confirmatory factor analysis and approved by a peer-review integrative group counseling.

Result The quantitative results show that the experimental group, after being intervened by group counseling, had higher resilience scores than those before being intervened by group counseling with a p value < 0.01. In addition, the experimental group had higher resilience scores when compared to the control group after being intervened by group counseling with a p value < 0.01. The qualitative results also support that the amphetamine -dependent women in the experimental group developed resilience in 15 categories which can be grouped into 3 main themes: individual, family and community factors.

Conclusion The integrative group counseling based on Satir model can be used to improve the resilience among amphetamine-dependent women.
