Programs to Reduce Game Addiction Behavior in Thai Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Main Article Content
Abstract
Abstract
Objective: To examine the characteristics of studies and to analyze the effect sizes of these programs in reducing game addiction behavior among Thai children and adolescents.
Materials and Methods: This research is a systematic review and meta-analysis in which research studies were retrieved from the Thai-Journal Citation Index (TCI), Thai Digital Collection (TDC), ASEAN Citation Index (ACI), Digital Research Information Center (DRIC), and Mental Health and Psychiatry Abstract Database of Thailand (MH&PADT) between September 1 and November 30, 2024, applying the Joanna Briggs Institute's knowledge synthesis process. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and meta-analysis of average effect sizes using SPSS software.
Results: A total of 8 studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 6 studies from 7 programs reported sufficient statistical data for meta-analysis, with a total sample of 235 Thai children and adolescents. The overall average effect size was -1.59 (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: -2.51 to -0.66, P=0.00). The meta-analysis showed that the Motivational Interviewing program (Cohen's d = -2.32, 95% CI: -3.66 to -0.97, P<.01), the Self-Behavioral Control program (Cohen's d = -2.18, 95% CI: -3.00 to -1.36, P<.01), and the Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy program (Cohen's d = -0.11, 95% CI: -0.68 to 0.46, P=0.70) showed the differences in reducing game addiction behavior.
Conclusion: The Motivational Interviewing program, the Self-Behavioral Control program, and the Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy program are the top three most effective interventions for reducing game addiction behavior in Thai children and adolescents, respectively.
