Abstract

Objective: To study the prevalence of nicotine dependence and factors associated with nicotine dependence in schizophrenia patients at outpatient department of Sukhothai Hospital.

Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 204 schizophrenic patients at outpatient department of Sukhothai Hospital. Data were collected from October 2023 to December 2023. Participants were evaluated with Thai version of the Fagerstrom Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND) for severity of nicotine dependence. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and unpaired t-test (statistical significance = p<0.05).

Results: All 204 schizophrenic patients (128 males, 76 females) were found to have a 35.3% prevalence of nicotine dependence. Factors significantly associated with nicotine dependence (p < 0.05) included younger age, male gender, single marital status, education level below a bachelor's degree, concurrent use of other substances, and having a family member who uses substances.

Conclusions: More than one third of patients with schizophrenia experienced nicotine dependence, which was associated with younger age, male gender, being single, having less than a bachelor's degree education level, concurrent use of other drugs, and having a family member who uses drugs.
