Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this research was to translate the Fear of Missing Out Scale into Thai by the back-translation technique and examine the psychometric properties in terms of reliability and validity.

Materials and methods:  This research has translated the Fear of Missing Out Scale by back-translation technique and examined the psychometric properties. Data were collected online from May to October 2019 with a sample group of 424 participants aged between 18-40 living in Thailand by using Fear of Missing Out Scale(FoMOs): Thai Version, The Pictorial Thai Self-Esteem Scale (PTSS), The International Personality Item Pool-NEO (IPIP-NEO) (only extroversion), and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS).

Results: The Fear of missing out scale (FoMOs): Thai version had a positive significant correlation value of 0.96 by comparing with the original version (r = 0.96) and also had an internal consistency reliability by Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.94. For content validity, the measurement had the index of items’ objective congruence (IOC) = 0.9. The Criterion – Related validity found a statistically significant correlation between FOMO and SIAS (r = 0.63). Construct validity examination by Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) found one component with 67.84 percent of the variance.

Conclusion: The Fear of missing out scale (FoMOs): Thai version was suitable for use in Thais in terms of validity and reliability.
