Abstract


        Objective: To examine the prevalence and associated factors of postpartum depression at Bangplee Hospital, Samutprakarn Province.


         Materials and methods:  one hundred and fifty-three women who gave birth and returned to receive the four-week postpartum care at Bangplee Hospital, Samutprakarn Province were recruited in a cross-sectional study. Socio-demographic characteristics, reproductive history and child health factors were examined. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) Thai version with cut-point of 11/12 was used to identify cases of postpartum depression. Multivariate analysis was used to supply analytic results. 


        Results: The prevalence of postpartum depression at 4 weeks according to the EPDS Thai version was 13.1%. Factors associated with postpartum depression were depression during/after pregnancy, anxiety during pregnancy, financial problems, discharge with the baby after childbirth, child health in the previous week. A significant associated factor of postpartum depression was depression during/after pregnancy.   


         Conclusions: The prevalence of postpartum depression at Bangplee Hospital, Samutprakarn Province was 13.1%. The significant associated factor of postpartum depression was depression during/after pregnancy.
