Program to Promote Elderly Mental Health Focusing on Family and Community Participation
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To develop and test the program to promote mental health of older adults focusing on family and community participation.
Method: This research and development (R & D) was divided into 2 phases, which included 1) program development and 2) program testing. The first phase consisted of literature review; integration of the previous research results conducted by the research team; and the results of the focus group with 30 participants including older adults, caregivers, village health volunteers and community leaders. The second phase aimed to compare Thai Mental Health Indicator-15 (TMHI-15) mean scores at baseline, and after completing the program. Data were collected between June to August 2018. Sixty older adults participated in this program. One group pretest-posttest design was used. Thai Mental Health Indicator-15 (TMHI-15) was evaluated 2 times at baseline, and after completing the program. Data were analyzed using pair t-test.
Result: The result showed that there are 6 components of the program to promote mental health of older adults including 1) body movement leads to a happy mind 2) happy mind leads to physical well-being 3) making a merit and charity lead to a happy mind 4) feeling valued leads to feeling happy 5) volunteering based on “loving and caring for each others” 6) “loving and sharing” to learn together. These components were used to create 6 group activities for the elderly and their families. Each activity required 90-120 minutes to be completed. TMHI-15 mean scores after completing the program were significantly higher than at baseline ( p < .001).
Conclusion: The program to promote mental health of older adults may help promote better mental health among the elderly.
