Abstract

Objective: To study the effects of Thai folk dance intervention on depression symptoms, hope and meaning in life of female patients with major depression.

Materials and methods: The quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design of this study was used to compare the average score of depression, hope and meaning in life. A sample of 24 female inpatients with a major depressive disorder was selected purposively during October 2018 to May 2019. They were voluntarily separated into 2 groups; the experimental group and control group, which comprised 12 persons each. Data were analyzed by using the Paired T-Test and Independent T-Test.

Results: The results revealed that the average score of depression in the experimental group was decreased to the normal level, while the average score of hope and meaning in life were decreased significantly (p < .05). When comparing between the two groups after treatment, there was no significant difference in the average score of depression and hope, but the average score of meaning in life was significantly different (p < .05).

Conclusions: The incorporation of Thai folk dance intervention with the usual treatment for female patients with major depressive could increase the meaning in life, but with no effect on depression and hope.
