Abstract

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of malnutrition in alcohol-dependent inpatients of Suanprung psychiatric hospital and determine the correlation of malnutrition and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Materials and methods:  The sample comprised 250 alcohol dependent patients who received services at the inpatient department of Suanprung psychiatric hospital, Chiang Mai Province from January to March 2019. The nutritional state was assessed with interviewing, physical examination, laboratory investigation and Nutritional Triage 2013 score. The severity of alcohol withdrawal was assessed with Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol (CIWA - Ar). Data were analyzed using Descriptive statistics. Chi-square and spearman’s correlation was used to determine the correlation of malnutrition and alcohol withdrawal symptoms and Mann-Whitney U test to determine the correlation of malnutrition and duration of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Results: 250 patients were recruited for this study. The prevalence of malnutrition was 38% (mild, moderate and severe degree were 19.6%, 14.8% and 3.6%, respectively).  A significant correlation was found between malnutrition and severity of alcohol withdrawal symptoms and between malnutrition and duration of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Conclusion:  The prevalence of malnutrition in alcohol dependent inpatients in Suanprung Psychiatric Hospital was 38%. It was revealed to be significantly correlated with the severity of alcohol withdrawal symptoms and duration of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
