Abstract

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the Stress Therapy Program in caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and to identify the relation between personal information and the caregiver’s level of stress.

Materials and methods: The quasi-experimental research was carried out with  a sample group of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia admitted at Lamlukka Hospital, Klong Luang Hospital and Nong Suea Hospital, Pathumthani province. The sample comprised of 40 caregivers who were divided into an experimental group of 20 caregivers and a control group of 20 caregivers.  Research tools consisted of Stress Therapy Program for caregivers of patients with schizophrenia,  which was created from January to March, 2018, and Stress Test for caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. The data analysis was performed using frequency, percentage, means, standard deviation, independent t-tests, paired t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation.

Results: After participating in the stress Therapy Program, the average stress score of the experimental group was significantly reduced in comparison to before he program (p<0.01). Furthermore, an average stress score of the experiment group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.01). Personal factors such as gender, age, marital status, education, occupation, average monthly income, relationship with the patient, patient care period and number of hours caring for the patient did not affect the stress levels of the caregivers of patients with schizophrenia.

Conclusion: The Stress Therapy Program may reduce stress among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia.
