Abstract

Introduction: This article reviews the literature on “Mindful Parenting”. The objective of this review is to be beneficial to those interested in studying and developing Buddhist mindfulness, which can lead to changes and alleviation of distress in parenting.

Content: Mindfulness in parenting which was developed from western psychotherapists adopted the definition from the psychotherapy context. This means being in the present and with no judgment on the present moment that may affect the parents’ minds, emotions, thoughts, and interactions with the child. It is essentially different from the Buddhist mindfulness which proposes to eliminate distress by contemplating on the natural truth through the perception. Mindfulness in parenting then comes from being aware  of what happens during parenting and contemplating by examining what is in one's awareness while parenting.

Conclusion: Mindfulness in Parenting in the Buddhist context means to focus and examine the child's nature and the parenting situation which then leads to the letting go of attachments and being able to execute the situation properly, for promoting the well-being to both the parent and the child.
