Lifestyle modification in the high-risk group for type 2 diabetes, Kalasin Province

Abstract

        The purposes of this action research study were to modify physical activity behavior of high risk group for type 2 Diabetes Mellitus to reach the standard and effective promote over weight high risk group to reduce weight at least 7% of body weight within 24 weeks. The study was divided into two phases.
        The first phase: Situation analysis and group readiness for changing, conducted by using a multistage sample of 591 high risks, aged 35 year and higher, tool and method of data collection were verbal screening form and interviewed questionnaire.
Research findings showed that 64.4% of high risks were maintenance stage, 85.6% of them have reached to the physical activity standard guideline and 76.6% of those Body Mass Index were higher than standard.
        The second phase: Modified physical activity behavior by controling weight of 419 high risk patients who has absolutely risk score at 7 or an obvious Body Mass Index higher than standard. The intervention used a structure of action research by
participation of group and stages of change to determine their readiness for appropriate physical activity recommendation before starting program. High risk group was given knowledge and activities that consist of participating in planning, goal setting to control body weight, physical fitness examination and contracted a commitment within group and including a decorous individual counseling, participants could self-select type of physical activity properly. Evaluations were launched before starting program and once after then 3 months to change the appropriate method if necessary, after six - month evaluative feedback was conducted, the presented increasing of participants’ maintenance stage were 77.8%, physical activity increased from 85.6% to 92.1%, weight control at least 7% and less than 7% were 19.7% and 49.0% respectively.
        In conclusion, modification of physical activity and control body weight among high risk group most likely individual readiness should be considering, achievement depend on integrated various methods, particular influence of group, continuous follow-ups and including good model who would assist to implement ideas and practices.
