Caries Status and Factor related in 3-5 -Year-Old Children Attended Thalassemia Clinic at Nakhon Phanom Hospital

Abstract

This research aimed to study caries status and factor related between socioeconomic status, oral health care, dietary practices, knowledge, attitude and practice in 3-5 -Year-Old Children Attended Thalassemia Clinic at Nakhon Phanom Hospital. Cross-sectional analytical study conducted by recording tooth status, mean debris score and enamel hypoplasia status of 60 children and interviewing their caregivers involving and socioeconomic status, oral health care, dietary practices, knowledge, attitude and practice. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and inferential statistics, i.e., Chi-square, Multivariable logistic regression, odds ratio (OR), Wilcoxon rank sum test and t-test Analysis. Seventy five percent of children had dental caries. Mean dmft was 9.67 (+5.93) teeth. Mean debris score 0.98 (+0.75) and 5% of children had enamel hypoplasia. The factor related according to Chi-square analysis were oral self-cleaning, debris score>1 and enamel hypoplasia. Multivariable logistic regression showed that education level and debris score>1 were the most significantly associated with dental caries, followed by self-cleaning. Wilcoxon rank sum test showed that attitude of caregiver was significantly associated with dental caries. This research found that education level (OR 0.04, 95% CI 0.003-0.51), debris score>1 (OR 68.88, 95% CI 2.32-2042.66) and self-cleaning (OR 38.11, 95% CI 1.14-1275.63) are factor related of caries status in 3-5 -Year-Old Children Attended Thalassemia Clinic at Nakhon Phanom Hospital.
