A study of pathology reports of appendixes specimens in patients with appendectomy at Mukdahan Hospital

Abstract

This descriptive study was aimed to study pathology reports of appendixes specimens in patients with appendectomy at Mukdahan Hospital. Between January 2012 and January 2014, 411 pathology reports of appendixes specimens. Percentage, mean, mean rank, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Chi-Square Tests and Odds Ratio, 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05) were analyzed by statistic software. The study found that the patients with appendectomy are slightly more female than male 55.2% and 44.8% respectively mean age was 35.4±18.9 years. The appendixes were 0.9 ± 0.3 and 6.0 ± 1.7 cm in width and length. The mean rank width and length of appendixes in males was 233.32 and 231.57, significantly higher than females (p value < 0.05). Lumen contains had the most fecal material 48.7%. Results of patient with appendectomy for acute appendicitis and similar ruptured appendicitis were 29.9% and 29.4%, respectively. When considering relationship, the age, gender and width of appendicitis were significantly correlated with Ruptured appendicitis (p value < 0.05). Male is a risk factor for Ruptured appendicitis. More than females about 2 times (Odds Ratio = 2.019, 95% Confidence Interval = 1.314 -3.104). The results showed that about one third of patients with appendectomy had ruptured appendicitis, and males were at risk for ruptured appendicitis. Therefore, the Pubilc health service in Mukdahan province can the study results reflect the quality of patient treatment. Basic information is applied to daily operations to review the maintenance process and develop methods to diagnose acute appendicitis and ruptured appendicitis. It is useful to develop quality of service, to provide effective patient care.
