Abstract

Peripheral ossifying fibroma is a soft tissue growth at gingiva that is considered to be a reactive lesion rather than neoplastic in nature. The pathogenesis of this lesion is uncertain. This lesion occurs exclusively on the gingiva. It appears as a nodular mass, either pedunculated or sessile, that usually emanates from interdental papilla. The color ranges from red to pink, and the surface is frequently, but not always, ulcerated. Most lesions are less than 2 cm in size. Although larger ones occasionally occur. The lesion often has been presented for many weeks or months before the diagnosis is made.

Case report : A 47-year-old female came to see a dentist with a chief complaint of a painless growth of soft tissue in lingual aspect of the right mandible for 8 months. Intraoral examination revealed a single pedunculate 2.6 cm. x 1.6 cm. in size with gingiva-like surface, pale pink in color, extending mesiodistally from first premolar to first molar at lingual aspect. Excisional biopsy of the growth was performed under local anesthesia. Pathological diagnosis is peripheral ossifying fibroma. A period of 2 years and 3 months follow-up, no recurrence of lesions was found.
