Abstract

Objectives: To study the prevalence of H.pylori infection among dyspeptic patients in Chumphae hospital and to study any association between ages, sex, endoscopic findings in dyspeptic patients and H.pylori infection.

Materials and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out in 326 patients presented to Chumphae hospital with dyspepsia and underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and tissue sampling for H.pylori by the rapid urease test during October 1, 2017 and April 30, 2020. Patients were considered H.pylori infection if test was positive.

Results: From 326 patients, (151 male, 175 female) the average age was 57.64±14.7 (range 15-93 years). The result showed that there were 133 H.pylori infections (40.8%) with age over 50 years in 99 cases (74.4%) and male 78 cases (58.6%). The endoscopic findings were gastritis (76.7%), gastric ulcer (14.1%), duodenal ulcer (4.9%), duodenitis (1.2%), gastric cancer (0.6%) and normal study (2.5%). Only the findings of gastritis and gastric ulcer were significant associated with H.pylori infection (p <0.05).

Conclusion: The prevalence of H.pylori infection in dyspeptic patients was still high and had significant correlation with gastritis and gastric ulcer. Early detection and prompt treatment are essential for prevention of serious complications.
