Abstract

Objective : Pre-operative education improves the patient knowledge and decreases anxiety about the process of anesthesia and risks associated with it. The objective of this study was to study the effect of anesthetic information leaflet on patient’s knowledge and anxiety. Methods : After institutional of ethics committee approved, a prospective, randomized controlled trial study was conducted in 152 patients who were in ASA physical status 1-3, aged 15-70 years, and underwent an elective surgery under anesthesia in Chumphae hospital. The patients were randomly allocated to read and unread leaflet group, based on computer generated number. The questionnaire was administered to all patients and then they had a routine pre-operative visit by the same anesthesiologist. Statistical significance was established at p < 0.05. Results :The patients who read the leaflet, had knowledge in anesthesia more than the unread group, statistic significantly. There was no difference in the anxiety related to surgery between both groups. Conclusions : Anesthetic information leaflet improved patient’s knowledge but did not reduce anxiety related to surgery.
