Characters increase risk of post tonsillectomy hemorrhage after discharge from Nakhonphanom hospital

Abstract

Background: Enlarged tonsils from chronic tonsillitis or cancer cause narrowing of airway, upper airway obstruction and obstructive sleep apnea, especially in children. Post tonsillectomy hemorrhage is the most common complication that can be found 5-10 days after surgery. Objective: To study the characters increase risk of post tonsillectomy hemorrhage after discharge. Materials and methods: This study was hypothesis, retrospective cohort study. Data was collected from medical records of patients who underwent tonsillectomy between 2013-2016 in department of Ophthalmootolaryngology, Nakhonphanom hospital. Parameters were analyzed, including demographic data, type of surgery, cough and sputum splitting. The exact probability test, t-test and chi-squared test were used to compare between 2 groups. The risks were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression. Results: Post tonsillectomy hemorrhage increased in male, heavy cough or sputum splitting and non-cold liquid dietary. Conclusion: Every patient who undergo tonsillectomy should be suggested about cold liquid drinking and heavy cough or sputum splitting avoidance for 1 week after surgery, especially in male, those increased risk of post tonsillectomy hemorrhage.
