Effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum treatment On acute diarrhea in childhood

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of Lactobacillus acidophilus plus Bifidobacterium bifidum in the treatment of acute diarrhea.
Materials and Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial of children aged 1-60 months hospitalized with acute diarrhea in Department of Pediatrics, Mukdahan hospital. Children meet the inclusion criteria were randomized to study group (receive probiotics containing Lactobacillus acidophilus plus Bifidobacterium bifidum as an adjunct to standard of care) or control group. Primary outcome was duration of hospital stay.
Results: 154 children were enrolled and randomized into study group and control group. The patient’s characteristics were not different between the study group and the control group. The mean duration of hospital stay in the study group and the control group were 1.68 and 1.79 days, respectively (p=0.547). The direct medical costs in the study group and the control group were 2,662 and 2,495 baht, respectively. (p=0.338).
Conclusion: The mean duration of hospital stay of children with acute diarrhea was not different between study group and control group.
