Comparative the efficacy of post-operative nasal cannula 30 minutes versus 60 minutes in Patient undergoing surgery under general anesthesia technique

Abstract

Objectives : The main purpose was to compare the effect of oxygen supplement via nasal cannula on peripheral oxygen saturation during early post operative period in patient’ s undergoing general anesthesia between 30 minute and 60 minutes.

Materials and method : This study was the prospective randomized control trial study implemented between October 2020 and December 2020 in operating department at Nakhon Phanom hospital. The patient’s undergoing general anesthesia was included in this study 160 cases. Comparing the effect of oxygen supplement via nasal cannula on peripheral oxygen saturation during early post operative period in PACU between 30 minute and 60 minutes. After consent was given, patients were randomized allocation in each group by block of four method to 80 cases. Each group of the groups were repeated measures peripheral oxygen saturation in 4 periods including first time start oxygen supplement, then follow up time at 15, 30 ,45, and 60 minute. The peripheral oxygen saturation was observed keeping above 94 % for 60 minute. The Post Anesthesia Recovery score criterion was assessed before transfer to ward.

Results : The results demonstrated that the method of oxygen supplement via nasal cannula for 30 minute and 60 minute had not significant difference mean oxygen saturation in follow up time at 30 and 60 minute with p-value 0.816, and 0.143 respectively. The upper bound of 95% CI of mean oxygen saturation ratio less than the criterion point 1.5 at 0.998 (95%CI = 0.537-1.376). We can concluded that the oxygen supplement for 30 minute can maintain the peripheral oxygen saturation as good as the oxygen supplement for 60 minute with Non-inferior analyst. This outcome could be guideline for justification of oxygen supplement protocol at PACU.

Conclusion : The oxygen supplement for 30 minute had sufficiency to maintain peripheral oxygen saturation in Non-inferior analyst with oxygen supplement for 60 minute. This result could be developed guideline for oxygen supplement post operation period in patient’s with general anesthesia at PACU.
