Abstract

Wahn Nang Kham, Curcuma aromatica Salb., Zingiberaceae is widely used for skin rash, analgelsics, sedatives, hepatitis and anti-inflammatory. It is also well known as a condiment and an ingredient in skin cosmetics. In this work, Wahn Nang Kham collected from 5 sources was investigated for chemical identity purpose. A GC-MS, relative retention index as well as the comparison with some authentic standards were carried out to identify the constituents in the volatile oil. The relative contents of the constituents in the volatile oil of Wahn Nang Kham collected from Mahasarakham composed of camphor 7.31, iso-borneol 0.58, borneol 0.46, ar-curcumene 5.62, benzofuran 3.63, acorenol 6.48, camphenilol 0.40, bicyclogermacrene 0.62, farnesene 0.46 and bergamotene 0.16% of the total areas, respectively. The contents of camphor, iso-borneol and borneol in the volatile oil of the five sources ranged from 0.79-8.69%, 0.16-1.78% and 0-1.02%w/v, respectively. The thin layer chromatographic fingerprint shown that the constituents of the four sources were similar but not identical.
