ไข้หวัดใหญ่ในสยามช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 : มุมมองจากสถานการณ์โควิด-19

การระบาดของไข้หวัดใหญ่ในสยามช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 ควรเป็นที่สนใจในปัจจุบัน เนื่องจากสถานการณ์โควิด-19 เพราะในเหตุการณ์นั้นมีผู้ป่วยจำนวนมากถึง 2.5 ล้านคน และตายไม่น้อยกว่า 8 หมื่นคน อาจมีความเข้าใจผิดได้ว่า การส่งทหารอาสาสมัครไปร่วมรบในยุโรป นำโรคร้ายนี้เข้ามาในราชอาณาจักร แต่จากการสืบค้นพบว่า การระบาดของโรคเกิดขึ้นตั้งแต่ช่วงที่กองทหารยังไม่กลับจากสงคราม ดังนั้น ต้องมีสาเหตุอื่นที่นำเชื้อไวรัสก่อโรคเข้ามาในเขตพระนคร ซึ่งเกิดการระบาดของโรคอย่างมาก มีผู้ป่วยถึง 2 แสนคนจากพลเมือง 5 แสนคนในสมัยนั้น และตายสูงสุดถึง 65 คน ภายในวันเดียว การระบาดในสยามประเทศเกิดขึ้นรอบแรกนาน 2 เดือน (ตุลาคม-พฤศจิกายน 2461) และดูเหมือนสงบลงในเดือนธันวาคม แต่แล้วกลับมาระบาดอีกรอบนาน 3 เดือน (มกราคม-มีนาคม 2462) จึงสงบลงอย่างถาวร บทความนี้ได้สืบค้นหาสาเหตุที่ทำให้การระบาดกลับมาใหม่ โดยหวังว่า บทเรียนจากอดีตของไข้หวัดใหญ่ที่ระบาดไปทั่วโลก และคร่าชีวิตประชากรโลกไปกว่า 50 ล้านคน จะช่วยให้มีความรู้ความเข้าใจ นำไปสู่การรับมือสถานการณ์โควิด-19 ในปัจจุบัน และโรคติดต่ออื่น ๆ ในอนาคต
