Abstract

This qualitative research aimed to investigate the perception and influence of information on e-cigarette smoking behaviors. In-depth interviews via telephone were used to collect data among e-cigarette users. Snowball or chain sampling method was used to select the samples of 27 e-cigarette users between 1-30 July 2021. The results showed that most of them had experienced smoking both e-cigarettes and manufactured cigarettes. The purpose of using e-cigarettes was to assist the cessation of cigarette smoking. Despite the high price of e-cigarettes, most smokers preferred to use them because of their excellent scent and taste, convenience to use, and modern design. Before deciding to smoke, most of them had searched for information on e-cigarettes on the internet, which was the most common source of information. Although most e-cigarette users were aware that e-cigarettes are banned in Thailand, the legal information about e-cigarettes had no impact on smokers' decisions and behaviors. While complete information on the safety profile of e-cigarettes was still unknown, most of them believed that e-cigarettes were safer than conventional cigarettes and could help them quit smoking. They had a little or no understanding of how e-cigarettes work. E-cigarette liquids were typically chosen based primarily on scent or taste rather than nicotine concentrations. Information on health effects and smoking cessation efficacy are vital factors in deciding whether or not to vape e-cigarettes. As a result, this study suggests strict law enforcement for prohibiting the solicitation advertisements of e-cigarette sales. Thorough publicity of the apparent health effects of e-cigarettes will help people make decisions about anti e-cigarette practices and quitting e-cigarettes.
