Factors associated with medication use behaviors among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in nathom district, nakhonphanom province

Abstract

This Descriptive research aimed to the Knowledge, medication use behaviors among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. And relationship between Medication use behaviors in type 2 diabetic patients with the personal characteristics and knowledge. Purposive sampling was 298 Type 2 diabetic patients who have been registered at the diabetic clinic at the Nathom hospital of Nakhonphanom province. Data were collected by using structured interview from June to August 2017. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient. The results show that majority were female as 74.16%, average age 60.97 years, married as 80.54%, primary education 94.63%, agriculture occupation 66.10%, monthly income less than 3,000 Baht as 86.92%, welfare scheme as 95.30%, duration of diabetes mellitus was 9.09 years, complications from diabetes mellitus as 65.77%, medication for treatment was 67.79, no relative has diabetes mellitus 81.21% and doesn’t have Caregivers on diabetes medications 83.69%. The majority of participants in this study obtained good level of knowledge as 98.60%, medication use behaviors were at a moderate level 76.17%. The cooperative behavior was high level at 96.98%. The factors resulted in stopping or adjusting medication were moderate level 89.26% and 86.58%. The relationship between the duration of disease was positively correlated with the medication use behavior of type 2 diabetic mellitus were statistically significant at 0.05 (r= 0.138, p = 0.018). but the knowledge not related to overall of medication use behavior. Moreover, when considering into each dimension of medication use behaviors, the knowledge having negative association with storage behavior statistically significant at 0.05 (r= -0.163, p = 0.005), and having negative correlation with stopping or adjusting behavior statistically significant at < 0.01 (r= -0.323, p = 0.005)
