Data was retrieved from hospital medical records. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and logistic regression were employed for data analysis.

Results revealed that at 2 hours after loading dose, 60.11% of the women had serum magnesium levels within therapeutic level (4-8-8.4 mg/dL) while 39.88 % were at subtherapeutic level (<4.8 mg/dL). It was found that obesity (BMI≥30 Kg/m2) was a significant risk factor for subtherapeutic levels (p value = 0.003, OR=2.71, 95% CI:1.39-5.34), with 74.3% of all obese women were at subtherapeutic magnesium levels. Results indicated that there is a need to review MgSO4 treatment regimen to reduce subtherapeutic magnesium levels, so that treatment for severe pre-eclampsia can be improved.
ER -
