Twenty one patients were from Laos PDR and six patients were from Europe. Most of them were male, age 41-50 years, unemployed or retired, and possessed lower than baccalaureate degree education. Twenty one patients were Buddhist and eighteen patients had been hospitalized only once. Most patients stay in the hospital for only 1-5 days just to reduce the admitting symptoms. The nursing process used for transcultural nursing required the knowledge in cross-cultural assessment. In order to assist patients’ adjustment to new environment, the nurses must be sensitive in evaluating patients’ communication abilities, recognizing rules and restriction related to their culture and religion, and interpreting their
responses to care. For Laotian patients, communication was not a barrier to care. Only their values and beliefs were different from those of the nurses’. On the other hand, nurses must be careful when caring for European patients because of language barrier. As a result, caring for European patients nurses must consider the way to communicate with patients and their families, how to develop therapeutic relationship, gain the understanding of patients’ ways of life, and be aware of diverse values and beliefs. In addition, careful listening and larifying will enhance nurses’ understanding of patients’ needs. Otherwise, caring for foreign patients was similar to what was normally provided to Thai patients which include giving prescribed medication, managing patients’ nutrition and environment, teaching self-care knowledge, organizing group therapy, giving counseling and developing therapeutic relationship.
}, number={3}, journal={วารสารการพยาบาลและการดูแลสุขภาพ}, author={แสวงเจริญ กฤตยา and เวชสุวรรณ ศุภรัตน์}, year={2016}, month={ต.ค.}, pages={6–11} }
