Research was conducted by interview with 20 persons currently being treated in an HIV clinic in the northeastern region of Thailand. Interview data were tape recorded and verbatim transcribed for content analysis.

Research findings showed that men viewed a sexual intercourse as a good husband’s duty while women viewed it as a wife’s duty to fulfils her husband’s sexual need and happiness. Effects of the ARV drugs differed between individuals. In some cases, those infected reported that the ARV drugs caused them to feel weaker and more tired and therefore less inclined to engage in sexual intercourse. On the other hand, some found that, through improving their general health, ARV drugs caused them to be more likely to engage in sexual intercourse. Some reported no effect on the desire for sexual intercourse. With regard to use of condoms, women considered that they could not refuse sexual intercourse irrespective on the use of condom, as sexual intercourse was their duty. On the contrary, men considered that the issue was their own happiness, whether or not a condom was used. The findings in this research demonstrate overviews of women and men on their own power control over sexual practice regardless of the use of ARV drugs and safe sex practice. This will be useful for married counseling and to design a safe sex practice measurement of HIV couples.

}, number={1}, journal={วารสารการพยาบาลและการดูแลสุขภาพ}, author={รุจกรกานต์ ดรุณี and ก้าวหน้าไกล จารุวรรณ and เขม้นการ กนกจันทร์ and มีนา ประภาพร and จันดีกระยอม สุวดี}, year={2013}, month={ก.พ.}, pages={12–21} }
