Oxolinic acid is a quinolone derivative. It is a synthetic antimicrobial agent whichOxolinic acid is a quinolone derivative. It is a synthetic antimicrobial agent whichused to treat bacterial urinary tract infections, especially gram negative bacteria. It has beenused in veterinary medicine for the control of furunculosis, vibriosis and enteric redmouthdiseases. The mechanism of action of oxolinic acid inhibited bacterial DNA synthesis byeffecting on bacterial DNA gyrase. Toxicity of oxolinic acid occured mainly to the centralnervous system and gastrointestinal tract. Most of studies of residues of oxolinic acid werefound in aquaculture animals such as fish and shrimp because oxolinic acid is used worldwidein aquaculture industry. The studies found that the absorption of oxolinic acid in rainbow troutdepended on the temperature of water. And the residue time of oxytetracycline in sediment waslonger than oxolinic acid. In addition, oxolinic acid in hepatopancreas of shrimp had morehigher concentration than haemolymph and muscle and it also persisted in hepatopancreaslonger than muscle.
