Quality of life and preparation for quality aging, Society of Registered Nurses of private hospital, Bangkok Metropolis

Abstract

Background : According to previous studies on preparation for quality aging of registered nurses, most of them were nurses from regional medical centers under the government or the Ministry of Public Health so the results of those might be different from that of the private sector’s. Therefore, studies about preparation for quality aging society and quality of life among nurses in private hospitals might provide an integrative view of quality of life of
nurses and aging.


Objective : To study the quality of life and preparation for quality aging, Society of Registered Nurses in a private hospital, Bangkok Metropolis.


Materials and Methods : A total of 165 registered nurses aged 40 years or more were recruited in this study. Data collection using questionnaires consisted of 4 parts such as demographic data, social support, quality of life and preparing for quality aging questionnaire. Statistical method of data analysis included percentage, mean,
standard deviation, t-test, F-test (one way ANOVA), Pearson’s correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression.


Results : Most the registered nurses (74.5%) had moderate level of quality of life. Their preparation for quality aging was also of moderate level in all aspects, namely: mental health, financial, role in the family, physical health, leisure time spent and accommodation. Educational level and job position were significantly associated with the quality of life of the registers nurses (P <0.05). Social support and preparation for quality aging were positively significant, and correlated with quality of life. Variables that are significantly predictive of the quality of life
of registered nurses were: social support for resources from friends/co-workers, family, team leader, emotional support from team leader, their preparation for quality aging in physical health, financial, and accommodation      (r2 = 0.593, P <0.01).


Conclusion : Most registered nurses had moderate level of quality of life and also had the moderate level of preparing for quality aging society. Predictors of quality of life were: social supports for resources from friends/co-workers, team leaders, emotional supports from team leader and preparation for quality aging in physical health, financial, and accommodation.
