Is surface anatomy needed for registered nurses in Bali?

Abstract

Background : Surface anatomy is important for implementation of health promotion, prevention, curation, and rehabilitation in clinical nursing practice.


Objective : To in-depth interview based on self reports for applying surface anatomy of registered nurses in Bali.


Methods : The 41 registered nurses from the public hospitals and educational institutions in Buleleng Regency, Bali, Indonesia. The samples were recruited according to criteria, including Bachelor degree of Nursing from the same institution and also curriculum consist of anatomy in the topic of surface anatomy, working in the hospitals and educational institutions throughout Bali, Indonesia, in March - May 2017. In-depth interview based on self reports for applying surface anatomy of registered nurses. Simple random sampling was applied to collect data from the hospitals and educational institutions in Buleleng Regency, Bali, Indonesia. The qualitative data were processed by using on the content analysis.


Results : The participants were male 58.5% and female 41.5%, respectively. Surface anatomy is essential for registered nurses in Bali in four issues:


1) Physical examination for nursing diagnosis of patients


2) Physical examination for teaching nursing students


3) Nursing procedures and


4) Preparing to study in postgraduate courses.


Conclusion : The registered nurses can apply could utilize the theoretical knowledge of surface anatomy for working, teaching and preparing to study higher education. Thus, the theoretical knowledge of surface anatomy is a core component for registered nurses to work on nursing standard.
