Factors Associated with Health Literacy in Medical Cannabis Use Among Nursing Students in Private Institution of Higher Education in Bangkok

Abstract

This descriptive correlational research aimed to study the level of health literacy in medical cannabis use, personal attributes factors, factors related to medical cannabis use, and the relationships between those factors and health literacy in medical cannabis use among 323 freshmen to senior nursing students from 3 private higher education institutions in Bangkok. A random sample was selected by a multi-stage sampling method. The research tools consisted of a personal attributes data questionnaire on information related to medical cannabis use, and a health literacy in medical cannabis use questionnaire covering 6 areas. These research instruments were developed by the researchers based on the literature review and were validated by 5 experts. The content validity index (CVI) was 1.00. Reliability of the cognitive questionnaire was tested using the Kuder-Richardson 20 value, measuring .81, while reliability of access, communication skill, decision skill, media literacy, and self-management were assessed via questionnaire with Cronbach's alpha coefficients yielding values of .83, .91, .85, .85, and .82 respectively. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and Chi-square testing.

The results: nursing students in all years had a moderate level of health literacy in medical cannabis use at 81.7 (S.D. = 14.00). Gender, cumulative GPA, searching for information about medical cannabis use, experience in health literacy in medical cannabis use, and the need for medical cannabis use when illnesses occur in the future were significantly related to the health literacy in medical cannabis use among nursing students (p < .05).

Suggestion: educational institutions should provide nursing students with health literacy programmers on the use of medical cannabis. Therefore, it is necessary that nursing science teaching and learning integrates content concerning medical cannabis to which learners should be exposed.
