บทคัดย่อ

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the self-efficacy promoting program on the self-efficacy and the swallowing ability in stroke patients with dysphagia. A quasi-experimental design was conducted. The samples were stroke patients with dysphagia who were admitted in the medical or the neurosurgical units at a tertiary hospital in Thailand. They were divided into two groups, the control group and the experimental group. Thirty stroke patients with dysphagia were selected for each group. The instruments used in the study were the demographic questionnaire, the self-efficacy promoting program which was developed from the "Self-Efficacy Theory" (Bandura 1997), the practice manual, the video to improves knowledge and skillsregarding to mouth and tongue exercise of stroke patients with dysphagia, the self-efficacy questionnaire and the swallowing ability questionnaire. Descriptive statistics including frequencies, mean and standard deviation were used to evaluate the demographic data, self-efficacy and swallowing ability.Mann Whitney U test was used to compare self-efficacy and swallowing ability between the control and the experimental group while Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test was utilized to compare self-efficacy and swallowing ability between before and after using the self-efficacy promoting program in the experimental group.The results revealed that after the program: 1) The average score of self-efficacy in the experimental group hadsignificantly increased when compared to the scores before registering in the program. It increased with the statistical significance level of 0.05. 2) The mean self-efficacy score of patients in the experimental group was higher than that of the control group with a statistical significance level of 0.05. 3) The average swallowing abilityscorein the experimental group was higher than before registering in the program. This increased with a statistical significance level of 0.05. 4) The mean of swallowing ability scoresin the experimental group was higher than that of the control group with a statistical significance level of 0.05.
