Factor Related to Health Behavior and Health Status of Garbage Collectors in Phitsanulok Municipality

The purpose of this research is to study the factors related to health behavior and health status of garbage waste collectors of Phitsanulok municipality. The sample were 180 garbage waste collectors. Data were collected by using interviewing form. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test. The statistical significant were set at 0.05. The result showed that 86.1% of garbage collectors were male, 61.1 % had Body mass indices over 22.9 which classified as obese, and the most symptom found was musculo-skeletal problem accounted for 75.6 %. And 57.2% of samples have inappropriate health behavior , especially smoking 68.9%. In addition 51.1% and 53.3% of samples have knowledge about health prevention and safety in the workplace at moderate levels respectively.
The factors associated with health behavior significantly were knowledge (p<0.001), equipment supporting from department (p=0.030) and getting support from co-worker (p=0.012). In addition, the significant association between health prevention behavior with work accident was also found (p=0.023). So that municipalities and government agencies should have pre-employment medical assessment and implementing an effective occupational health and safety program including health promotion and prevention for the garbage waste collectors in order to promote the appropriate health behavior and health status.
