Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to study the smoking prevention behavior among male high school students and identify factors influencing the smoking prevention behaviors of male high school students. A sample of 374 male students at the upper secondary level was selected using multistage sampling. Data were collected between April and July 2023 via a questionnaire assessing knowledge about cigarettes, self-control, awareness of smoking dangers, social support, and smoking prevention behavior with a reliability coefficient of 0.94. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results showed that smoking prevention behavior among male high school students in a province of the lower northern region was at a high level, at 71.4 percent (Mean = 3.39, S.D. = 0.76). The factors influencing smoking prevention behavior of male high school students at a statistically significant level of 0.05 were social support from media (β = 0.285, p-value < 0.001), social support from family (β = 0.281, p-value < 0.001), self-control (β = 0.206, p-value < 0.001), social support from school (β = 0.102, p-value = 0.025), and awareness of the dangers of smoking (β = 0.088, p-value = 0.050). Collectively, these factors accounted for 55.5% of the variance in smoking prevention behavior among male high school students in the region. The findings underscore the importance of implementing activities that support and promote students' awareness of their ability to prevent smoking and encourage preventive behavior in various contexts.
