Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis is an important public health issue affecting the middle-aged and elderly, which tends to continue increasing. In Thai traditional medicine, knee osteoarthritis closely corresponds to the condition known as Jub Pong Hang Kao. This condition is primarily caused by knee joint degeneration, leading to reduced synovial fluid. It is one of the conditions commonly treated at the Thai traditional medicine clinic at Pak Chom Hospital in Loei Province. This quasi-experimental research study aimed to study the effectiveness of herbal poultices combined with behavioral modification, based on principles from Kum-Pee-Wet-Seuk-Saa, in 39 patients with Jub Pong Hang Kao. Patients applied herbal poultices every other day, along with educational sessions on behavioral modifications from Kum-Pee-Wet-Seuk-Saa. Outcomes were assessed through a Verbal Rating Scale (VRS), an osteoarthritis-specific assessment (WOMAC), and a knowledge assessment on behavioral modification. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a Paired sample t-test.
Results showed that the average pain scores post-experiment significantly decreased compared to pre-experiment scores (p-value < 0.001), and knowledge scores on behavioral modification significantly improved post-experiment (p-value < 0.001). Combining herbal poultices with behavioral modification based on Kum-Pee-Wet-Seuk-Saa offers a promising treatment and health promotion guideline for patients with knee osteoarthritis.
