This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effectiveness of the ORAL HEALTH CARE program on the dental health literacy and oral health care behaviors of the homebound elderly in Phosai District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The sample group consisted of 80 homebound older people, divided into an experimental group and a comparison group, with 40 individuals per group. The sample was selected using simple random sampling. The experimental group received activities according to the program for a period of 12 weeks, with data collected via interviews. These interviews had Cronbach's alpha values of 0.86 for dental health literacy and 0.74 for oral health care behaviors, respectively. Data analysis proceeded with descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (Paired sample t-test and Analysis of covariance: ANCOVA).
The results indicate that after the experiment, the experimental group showed significantly higher average scores for dental health literacy and oral health care behaviors compared to both their pre-experiment scores and those of the comparison group (p-value < 0.05). Additionally, the plaque index decreased and was lower than that of the comparison group (p-value < 0.05). From our findings, it was shown that the program applying health literacy concepts resulted in a better oral health care behaviors among the homebound elderly. Therefore, the local public health agency can adopt this program to promote oral health care practices that foster proper and appropriate behavioral changes among the homebound elderly.
