Factors associated with hazard prevention behaviors among refuse collectors in Phitsanulok Municipality, Phitsanulok Province

Abstract

This cross-sectional study aims to investigate factors associated with hazard prevention behaviors among refuse collectors in Phitsanulok Municipality, Phitsanulok Province. The sample was 80 refuse collectors. Data were collected from June to October 2019 using the questionnaires that consisting of 6 parts. The content validity was confirmed by 3 experts and computed for Item-Objective Congruence Index between 0.67-1.00 The reliability was conducted by Cronbachs' alpha obtained the value of 0.61-0.70. Data were analyzed by the Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson correlation coefficient.


The results showed that the sample had knowledge, attitude, and behavior towards hazard prevention at a good level, with 58.7%, 83.8% and 47.5%, respectively. The factors that were significantly associated with behavior towards hazard prevention were: gender (p-value = 0.018), marital status (p-value < 0.001), educational level (p-value = 0.011), attitude towards hazard prevention (r = 0.24, p-value = 0.034), job training (r = 0.40, p-value < 0.001), access to health information (r = 0.51, p-value < 0.001), safety administration (r = 0.43, p-value < 0.001) and social support (r = 0.43, p-value < 0.001). The results suggested that the organization should establish a training program for refuse collectors regarding the development of positive preventive safety attitude, providing health information, distributing the operation
